CAPE Caribbean Studies

Description

Understand the Caribbean. Master the research. Earn your CAPE Diploma.

Caribbean Studies is a required unit for both the CAPE Diploma and the CAPE Associate Degree, so every CAPE student needs to do well in it. Our CAPE Caribbean Studies course guides students through all three modules of the CXC syllabus, helping them understand Caribbean society, culture and development, and carry out a strong research project for their School-Based Assessment.

What students will learn:

  • Module 1: Caribbean Society and Culture: how the Caribbean region and its diaspora are defined; the historical process, from pre-Columbian settlement to independence; the characteristics of Caribbean society and culture; identity and social formation; the impact of geographical phenomena; the role of societal institutions; Caribbean arts and popular culture; and how the Caribbean interacts with the wider world.
  • Module 2: Issues in Caribbean Development: concepts and indicators of development; the factors that promote or hinder development; globalisation; the integration movement; the contributions of sport; Caribbean intellectual traditions; the roles of the mass media; and social justice.
  • Module 3: Investigating Issues in the Caribbean: the full research process, including identifying a research problem, writing research questions, evaluating sources, methods of enquiry, sampling, presenting and analysing data, writing conclusions and recommendations, referencing in APA or MLA style, and conducting research ethically.
