Our CAPE Communication Studies course guides sixth-form students through the complete Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) CAPE Communication Studies syllabus: all three modules. Clear, well-organised lessons break down challenging concepts step by step. They help students sharpen their command of Standard English, understand how language works in Caribbean society, and communicate with confidence in speech and writing. Communication Studies is one of the required units for the CXC Associate Degree, and the skills it builds support every other subject.
The course also prepares students for the School-Based Assessment (SBA), which is worth 20% of the final grade. The SBA is a portfolio on a theme of the student’s choice, made up of a general introduction, an exposition presented orally, a creative piece with a preface, an analysis of that piece, and a conclusion. Private candidates sit Paper 032 instead of the SBA.
What students will learn:
- Module 1: Gathering, Organising and Processing Information. This covers Standard English usage, genres and modes of expression, organisational strategies and literary techniques, and comprehension and summary skills. It also covers traditional and evolving media, data collection methods, evaluating sources on current issues, and presenting a portfolio of research.

It also covers the role of language in Caribbean identity, registers, dialects and attitudes to language, and the impact of technology on language and culture.
- Module 3: Speaking and Writing. This covers the communication process, and the factors that cause miscommunication, such as noise and misinformation.
